ChatGPT: A Practical Getting-Started Guide

ChatGPT can help turn a rough brief into a draft, organise unstructured notes or suggest a plan. The useful starting point is not “write something”; it is a clear task, relevant source material and a defined output. Treat the response as a draft that needs review, especially when facts or decisions matter.

Start with a usable brief

A strong first request tells the tool what you are trying to achieve, who the output is for and what material it may use. Paste only information you are permitted to share.

  • Task: the one thing you want completed.
  • Context: audience, purpose and relevant background.
  • Boundaries: tone, length, exclusions and facts that must not be changed.
  • Format: a table, checklist, outline or another structure you can review.

Three practical workflows

For recurring work, save the brief structure rather than relying on one long conversation. A fresh, well-defined request is easier to audit.

  1. Drafting: ask for two outlines before requesting full copy, choose the stronger structure, then revise the draft against your brief.
  2. Research preparation: turn a broad topic into questions, search terms and a source checklist. Do the actual source reading outside the chat.
  3. Analysis: supply clean, real data and ask for patterns, anomalies and questions. Recalculate important figures independently.

From a weak brief to a better one

“Write some WhatsApp messages for my showroom” leaves the audience, offer, language and boundaries unclear. A better brief supplies five inputs: desired outcome, intended reader, relevant background, verified information and output format. Add an example when tone or structure matters, and state what must not be assumed.

Where caution matters

  • A fluent answer can still be wrong, incomplete or based on a misunderstanding.
  • Do not paste confidential client data, passwords or sensitive personal information.
  • Check names, dates, quotations, calculations and links against original material.
  • Product capabilities and limits can vary by plan, account and region; consult the official help centre for current details.

Before you use the output

  • Does every factual statement trace back to a source you checked?
  • Did the tool invent details to fill gaps in your brief?
  • Does the output answer the actual business or reader question?
  • Have you rewritten generic wording and added your own judgement?
  • Have you checked current product capabilities rather than assuming browsing, file access or actions are available?
