A task-first comparison
A marketer can use Chat for a campaign brief or copy critique. A coding environment belongs with website or analytics implementation work and a reviewer who understands the changes. Task-based tools are justified only when the job benefits from their access.
- Claude Chat: discuss ideas, draft copy, summarise or review documents you are permitted to supply.
- Claude Code: support software work when someone can review code, repository operations and the effect of changes.
- Cowork: evaluate task-oriented workflows against the capabilities currently offered to your account, with explicit permissions and review points.
Four decision questions
- Does the task only need discussion, or must it read files, browse, run code or edit external systems?
- What exact permissions and confidential inputs are required?
- What could go wrong, and which actions would be difficult to reverse?
- Can a qualified person inspect the output before it affects customers, data or production systems?
Practical selection examples
Avoid a false feature matrix
- Do not copy old screenshots or third-party pricing claims into a decision.
- Confirm plan, region, platform and language availability.
- Distinguish reading data from changing an external system.
- Start with non-sensitive material and a small test.
- Keep credentials, publishing and irreversible actions under explicit human control.
