MarkItDown: Convert Documents Without Losing Meaning

Markdown is a lightweight text format that keeps headings, lists and links readable. Microsoft’s MarkItDown project provides conversion tools for supported file types, but support and formatting fidelity vary by format and version. Conversion can make research notes easier to search and prepare for AI-assisted analysis; it does not guarantee that every table, image, footnote or layout element survives unchanged.

Why Markdown can help

A clean text representation is easier to inspect than an opaque upload and can make headings, lists and source passages easier to discuss. It is a working copy, not a replacement for the authoritative document.

  • Keep the original file beside the converted version.
  • Preserve meaningful headings and source labels.
  • Record the converter version and any options you use.
  • Do not assume scanned images or complex tables were interpreted correctly.

A four-step conversion review

  1. Confirm that you have permission to process the file and follow the official project instructions for your environment.
  2. Convert a small, non-confidential sample before processing a larger set.
  3. Compare headings, tables, notes, links, numbers and missing content against the original.
  4. Clean obvious conversion issues, then decide whether uploading the resulting text to an AI service is authorised.

A realistic example

Conversion is not anonymisation

  • Private text remains private after its format changes.
  • Metadata, embedded comments or hidden content may need separate inspection.
  • Dependencies and processing location matter for confidential files.
  • Remove unnecessary personal information and follow your organisation’s AI-use policy.
  • Keep a human review between converted text and any published claim.
